If you are looking for distinctive home and garden décor, beautiful flower bouquets, unique pasta, gorgeous jewellery, yummy baked goods, artisan meat products, vegetable and flowering plants for your garden, a pretty hat or any number of other interesting, well-made and different items, head to the Duncan Farmers Market. It is one of the best and most interesting on the Island, and offers a huge variety of goods from upwards of 90 vendors.
The market is held in the old downtown core of Duncan each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Locally known as the Market in the Square, it is centred in the town square adjacent to city hall. It has grown so large, however, that it trails along one of the local side streets as well, offering visitors a cornucopia of delightful objects to peruse and, no doubt, purchase.
The central square is a lovely site lined with deciduous trees and benches for the weary. For those who are traveling on the Island and self-catering, it would be a wise idea to ensure that you have a cooler in which to store all your marvelous culinary finds. There is a great variety of options in the way of charcuterie meats, locally-raised poultry, beef and pork. Cowichan Pasta has on offer a huge selection of 100 per cent Vancouver Island-farmed, fished and foraged pasta (right down to the salt!) that is sure to have lovers of fine food salivating. There are decadent-looking cupcakes, traditional British baking, stalls overflowing with jams, jellies, gourmet sauces and other condiments.
Artists offer an eclectic variety of beautiful work, from greeting cards to carvings. There are clothes for kids, ladies’ hats, stalls offering the bounty of field and farm. Gardening enthusiasts can choose from a huge variety of plant material. There are hand-made soaps and personal care products, pet treats, wooden toys and other hand-made wooden delights. When you get tired, hungry and thirsty, you can enjoy a cup of locally-roasted coffee, grab a bite to eat from one of the vendors offering prepared meals, and sprawl out in the shade on one of the aforementioned benches. Live entertainment is featured in the square, and you may find a few buskers along your shopping route as well.
This market offers a delightful way to pass a couple of leisurely hours enjoying the bounty and incredible talent that the Island has to offer. If you are in the Duncan area (or even if you’re not – it’s worth a special trip!) be sure to set aside a Saturday morning to take this one in – it will be well worth the time and effort.
