Category Archives: SPECIAL PLACES

There are so many special places, both civilized and wild, on the Island that many visitors miss altogether. They are maybe just a little bit out of the way, off the main roads, or totally unknown by the producers of the multitudinous visitor guides that flood the Island each year. This section will introduce you to some of the interesting, quaint and/or quiet places on the Island. We will cover some of the iconic spots, too, simply because they are so worth seeing and spending some time at, and because we can offer you first-hand experiences rather than just a few words that may or may not pique your interest. Some of these special places are commercial enterprises, some are not. There are isolated villages, parks and peaceful walks that may take you out of your way, but will be worth every bit of the time and trouble you expend. So, if you’re interested in places that are a little out-of-the-ordinary, this section is for you.

Qualicum Bay’s Lighthouse Country Regional Trail

It has been more than four years since we last visited the south loop of the Lighthouse Country Regional Trail system near Qualicum Bay. In the past we have stuck to the easily-traversed and beautifully-constructed main trail, which now also … Continue reading

Errington’s North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre

World class. Those are the two best words I can think of to describe the North Island Wildlife Recovery and Educational Centre, tucked away in the secluded – but easily accessible – backwoods of the mid-Vancouver Island area. The NIWRC, … Continue reading

Qualicum Beach’s Nature’s Garden Trails

Thanks to a group of intrepid neighbours and an indulgent town administration (at least, we think it’s the town administration) there is an absolutely delightful, dog-friendly network of forested trails smack in the middle of Qualicum Beach. This is not … Continue reading

Cowichan’s Kinsol Trestle

There are a lot of people on Vancouver Island (and, doubtless, elsewhere) who would argue the wisdom of spending $7 million to rehabilitate a crumbling old train trestle in the middle of nowhere. We are not among those skeptics; in … Continue reading

Crofton’s Community Seawalk

The tiny community of Crofton (pop. 2,500) is probably best known as a jumping-off spot for the ferry to Vesuvius Bay on Salt Spring Island and, of course, for the massive Catalyst pulp and paper mill, perched on … Continue reading

Qualicum Beach’s Heritage Forest

The story of Qualicum Beach’s 50-acre Heritage Forest is one of commitment, inspiration and a community that values natural beauty. There aren’t many towns of 8,800 that can boast of pristine forest lands right in their midst, but thanks to … Continue reading

Qualicum Beach’s undocumented Town Trail

If you didn’t know it was there, you might never actually find it. There is a lovely trail in Qualicum Beach (we call it the Town Trail) that has virtually no documentation, either in print or on-line. It isn’t listed … Continue reading
