Category Archives: WHERE TO EAT

My husband and I both love great food, and are always on the lookout for special ‘eating out’ experiences that offer good value as well as varied gustatory delights. Unless otherwise noted in a specific article, the dollar/price ratings at the end of each commentary apply to a basic meal for one person, before tip and taxes (which at present are an additional 12% in British Columbia). And for anyone who may be wondering, the standard tipping practice in this part of the world is 15% of the total before tax, 20% for exceptional service.

PRICE RATINGS

$ – $10 or less
$$ – $11 – $24
$$$ – $25 – $50
$$$$ – over $50, but worth it!

I hope you will take pleasure in some of the best (but largely unadvertised and often unheralded) culinary delights to be found on Vancouver Island. Enjoy!

Ladysmith’s Wild Poppy Bistro

Who knew? Who knew that a tiny town of 8,500 perched on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island could be home to an upscale bistro – gluten and peanut-free, no less! Well, the good residents of Ladysmith know, and that’s … Continue reading

Ladysmith’s Appetit – Food For Thought

Hole-in-the-wall eateries are always an adventure, and Ladysmith’s Appetit-Food For Thought is no exception. We first ate there several years ago when we enjoyed a quick, cheap ($4) and hearty dinner when we were in town for the annual Christmas … Continue reading

Waterfront dining at Kingfisher’s Ocean 7

Port Alberni’s Kleekhoot Gold Bigleaf Maple syrup

Oh my!  Those were the only words that came to mind when I recently had my first taste of Kleekhoot Gold maple syrup. The thick, buttery/caramel/maple flavour of this very unique product is a sensory delight in so many respects. … Continue reading

Port Alberni’s All Mex’d Up

I am not, by any stretch of the imagination, a connoisseur of Mexican food. But I know what I like and the fresh, satisfying flavours of the recently re-opened All Mex’d Up Taco Shop at Port Alberni’s Harbour Quay definitely … Continue reading

More great food at Qualicum Bay’s West Coast Food House

I don’t know how the tiny settlement of Qualicum Bay got so lucky in the ‘eating out’ department, but a second notable dining option in the form of West Coast Food House is helping put the seaside community on the … Continue reading

We weren’t quite sure what to make of Port Alberni’s La Bruschetta Bistro when we looked at the menu posted outside the entrance. ‘Welcome to Tradition’ it trumpeted, leaving us with the impression that we were heading in to an … Continue reading

Cassidy Country Kitchen – diner food with a difference

It’s diner food, but it’s diner food with a difference. After a couple of years of incredibly hard times and bad luck, the Cassidy Country Kitchen has literally risen from the ashes to become a new landmark located just off … Continue reading
